Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Strong Weekend at University of Toledo Invitational
The Holy Cross College men's tennis team traveled to the University of Toledo this past weekend to take on a mix of NCAA Division I and III talent across singles and doubles play, including matchups against Toledo, Eastern Kentucky, and Case Western.
Match 1: Tough Battle Against Toledo
The Saints opened the tournament facing the host team, the University of Toledo. In doubles play, the duo of Matthew Jezyk and Thomas Friesen put up a strong fight but fell 3-6, 3-6 to Toledo's Carvajal and Gonzalez. Over on court two, Oscar Wai and Calvin Golmei also fell short, defeated 3-6, 2-6 by Mackey and Sidoti.
In singles, Oscar Wai battled hard but came up just short in a 4-6, 4-6 match against Britez. The standout performance of the day came from Luca McManus, who emerged victorious over Borosko with a 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 comeback win.
Match 2: Saints Surge Against Eastern Kentucky
Holy Cross turned the momentum in their favor on Saturday with an impressive showing against Eastern Kentucky University.
Matthew Jezyk pulled off a thrilling comeback win over Joao Barreto, dropping the first set before securing the match 1-6, 6-4, 11-9. Luca McManus continued his strong form with a straight-set victory, taking down Adrian Contreres 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Despite a tough showing from Senior Calvin Golmei, who fell 2-6, 0-6 to Romeo Navarro, the Saints claimed a 2-1 advantage in singles play.
Match 3: Doubles Victory Against Case Western
To cap off the weekend, the Saints showcased their chemistry in doubles against Case Western's unattached players. The pair of McManus and Jezyk rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Matroin and Saylor 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 in a super tiebreak, marking another strong finish for the duo.
